Richie Hawtin is a British-born, Canadian-raised DJ and electronic musician, widely regarded as a key figure in the development of techno. Growing up near Detroit, he was directly influenced by the city’s early techno movement in the late ’80s and early ’90s, where machine-driven sound and futurist ideas shaped his outlook. As a founding force behind minimal techno, Hawtin helped strip electronic music back to rhythm, texture, and space. His work as a DJ, producer, and label head pushed techno toward precision and experimentation, redefining how electronic music could function on the dancefloor while remaining deeply underground.
